Ministers get update on RWC 2011 North Harbour transport plans

Monday, June 13, 2011

Government ministers visited North Harbour Stadium recently as part of a tour to update them on Auckland's transport plans for Rugby World Cup 2011 (RWC 2011).

Rugby World Cup 2011 Minister Murray McCully and Transport Minister Steven Joyce are pictured with Auckland Transport Chairman Mark Ford and North Harbour Stadium Chief Executive Craig Goodall.

North Harbour Stadium will host four of Auckland's 15 matches.

The ministers visited the bus hub a short walk from the stadium, where large numbers of fans will arrive by free special event buses.

Auckland Transport hosted the ministers on a tour of transport facilities being used for RWC 2011. As well as North Harbour Stadium, it included Kingsland Station, areas around Eden Park and what will become a major events operations centre in central Auckland.

Special event bus services and trains are free to all RWC 2011 games in Auckland with a match ticket.

About 12,000 are expected to use the 220 buses that will take fans to each game at North Harbour Stadium.

Special event buses will go to North Harbour Stadium direct from:
• North - Orewa, North Shore Busway stations and Takapuna
• Central - Auckland CBD (Britomart & Midtown - Civic on Queen St)
• South/East - Manukau, Botany and Pakuranga
• West - Henderson and Westgate.
Fans can use trains to get to Britomart in central Auckland and connect to special event buses leaving every five minutes for North Harbour.

For those driving, parking restrictions and road closures will be in place around the stadium.

However, parking will be available at the Bush Rd Industrial Estate, with a shuttle service operating between there and the stadium.  There will also be bus Park 'n' Ride facilities in Takapuna town centre, Smales Farm - Westlake, and Westgate Shopping centre - Massey.

People planning to drive are advised to carpool with others attending the game.

A dedicated taxi rank will operate from Don McKinnon Drive, near Appian Way.
